A baby shower is one way to celebrate a new “bundle of joy” in a friend or relative’s life. While watching the mom-to-be open her gifts and sipping punch may be enough excitement for some of your guests, you may have a few who need a little more action to stay entertained. Consider playing a shower game or two. The following “oldies but goodies” can provide ample amounts of fun, laughter and great memories at a shower if prepared for and executed correctly.

1) The “Dirty Diaper” game

The “Dirty Diaper” game is always a fun way to break the ice and remind the new mom of what a messy job she’s going to be taking on! Prepare miniature diapers (small enough to put on a safety pin) before the shower, filling one or two of the diapers with mustard. As guests arrive, pin a diaper to each person’s shirt. Have everyone open their diapers and the person with the “surprise” wins the game.

 2) The Baby Picture Game

A fun game that requires some pre-shower participation from your guests is the baby picture game. Arrange for each guest to bring a baby picture of themselves to the shower. All the guests will get a turn to guess who the picture belongs to – the guest with the most correct guesses wins. This game is guaranteed to get some laughs, a few “awwwws” and it is sure to provide fun for all.

3) Baby Word Scramble Game

Combine a classic word game with some baby knowledge and you can create a baby word scramble. Before the shower, make a list of baby words such as “colic”, “bottle”, “diaper” or “pacifier”. Scramble the letters (there are several websites online that will do this for you) and print copies for all your guests. Give the guests three minutes to unscramble as many words as possible.

4) Baby Word Search Game

A variation of the game above is the baby word search or the baby word crossword puzzle. Set the timer and watch your guests search for words or solve their crossword puzzle.

5) Baby Food Tasting Game

The baby food tasting game is a fun one to watch. Prepare several jars of baby foods and take a handful of volunteers from your guests. Blindfold them and have them taste each of the jars of food and declare to the audience what they think the food is. The guest with the most correct answers wins the game and a fabulous prize for having to eat baby food!

6) Nursery Rhyme Game

“Jack and Jill ___________ _________ ________ _______....” A nursery rhyme challenge is certain to be fun for all. Collect several popular (or not so popular, depending on how difficult you want the challenge to be) nursery rhymes and put them on paper, incomplete. The goal of the game is to fill in as many nursery rhyme blanks within the time-limit. Singing is certainly allowed!

7)  Present Wrapping Competition

One interesting twist to a baby shower could be a themed shower with a present wrapping competition. Have the mother-to-be judge the wrapping as she opens the gifts and choose a winner at the end of the shower. There are always the few creative guests who will arrive with a castle made out of diapers or their gifts in the shape of a baby.

8) Dirty Diaper Game

Turn the classic game of “hot potato” into the shower-appropriate game of “dirty diaper”. Play music while the guests pass around a diaper. When the music stops, the person left holding the diaper gets eliminated.

9) Draw The New Baby Game

Request that the mother-to-be bring in her baby’s latest ultrasound photo but do not allow her to show it to the guests. Provide each guest with a small square of paper and a pencil and instruct them to place the paper on top of their heads and draw what they believe the new baby looks like in the ultrasound photo. After the drawings are complete the mom-to-be can show the photo and compare the drawings to choose a winner. The drawings make for lots of laughter and they are nice mementos for the new mom to put in her baby scrap book.

10) Don't Say Baby Game

“Don’t say ‘baby’” can be an energetic game to keep your guests on their toes. Provide each guest with several tokens when they arrive and tell them that the word “baby” is off-limits at this shower. Any time they hear the word spoken by another guest, the first person to point it out will collect a token from the offender. At the end of the shower the person with the most tokens is declared the winner.

These baby shower games can be changed to suit your own tastes, themes and type of shower that you are throwing. Using one or several in conjunction with others is a great way to keep your shower fun and light while celebrating the birth of a blessing.
